I am a middle school teacher in Memphis, TN. This morning I had a student who was looking at AI's tattoos instead of doing his classwork.
Is this forum the place to get AI to talk about this with me or respond in some way? I see that AI is a courageous and fierce player with children of his own. While I do not follow basketball closely, I know that AI is admired by many of my students. I feel that a well-lived life will speak a lot louder than tattoos. You can make tattoos say anything you want them to say, but you have to mean what you do.
Anybody want to go one on one with me on this? |

FIRST, I HONESTLY DON'T BELEIVE THAT WAS A TEACHER TO BEGIN WITH AND SECONDLY IF HE WAS
HIS VIEW ON ALLEN IS AS IGNORANT AS RED NECKS IN THE SOUTH! YES THE MAN HAS TATTOOS
AND!! WHAT'S UR POINT... IF ALLEN DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING ON HIM BUT WHAT GOD GAVE HIM HE WOULD STILL BE ALLEN! THE TATTOOS DOESN'T MAKE THE MAN ...THE MAN MAKES THE MAN
SO BEFORE U BAD MOUTH ALLEN GET TO KNOW HIM (AND HIS TATTOOS).AND YES UR STUDENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN STUDING BUT HIM NOT STUDING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ALLEN ... CRITIZIE UR LESSON PLANS AND UR CLASS AS A WHOLE CAUSE EVIDENTLY THE LITTLE BOY WAS BORED WITH UR LESSON PLAN... DO SOMETHING TO SPICE UP UR CLASS AND HE WOULDN'T HAVE TO GO ELSE WHERE...LEARNING IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN... AND EVIDENTLY IT'S NOT IN UR CLASS

first, i doubt allen will come here to talk with his fans or anywhere online for that matter.
second, his tattoos are a part of him, they mean alot to him and also show people a piece of his life in a way.
for example, he has one of praying hands on chest(near his heart) with names of his children,wife and family around it, which meaning is quite simple really.
another on his arm that says " only the strong survive" meaning - thru all the things he has overcome in his life, he had to be strong and staying strong is why he is what he is today.
Another is a sign that means loyalty, which to him is very important.He made promises to friends & family before he was an nba star,and never forgot about them nor did he ever sell them out.
anyway, i could go on forever about this but as he says himself, whoever looks a his tattoos can understand some more about him.
i think thats probly why your students are lookin at his tattoos (altho i know they should be studying  ) because they wana know more about him, his life.And YES he does live up to all of the ink written on his body, its not just something he did for fun, just ask his fans.

Cru-thik and Daysha--step back and read the message again. There was nothing negative about Iverson. Don't know the man. Not used to this whole message board thing, either, but thanks for replying.
If all I ever knew about AI was what I read in his body ink I would know exactly what he wanted me to know, not what he really was, because he is the one in control of what all that ink means. What he lives is who he really is, not what he advertises.
And if you notice when that message was posted, it was during classtime. Pretty intersting class, don't you think? Your comments about my class without visiting it would be the same as if I made a comment about Iverson without watching him play...which I didn't do.
Peace out! It's a big enough world for every opinion. I'm not hating, I'm just taking my teaching where it leads me. Tattoos seem redundant--if you live the values of your life out loud you don't have to document it with body ink.  |

so basically what your sayin is why does anyone have tattoos, right? and with that, i think everyone has their reasons.
btw i wasnt hating on your comments, i was just tryin to give a reason to why allen has ink on him. |

cru-thik--you are right, man, I appreciate the comments you made. You seem to have a lot of class. Speaking of class, I shared the messages from you and Daysha with my class today. I printed them out and made a display for my school hallway. We related the responses to styles of communication, use of grammar and punctuation, as well as prejudices and perceptions. You made a valuable contribution to the discussion. I'm going to make it a point to check out AI next chance I get.
