Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by webmaster

If Brown is anywhere next year, he'll be with Sixers. Spirited Sixers prevail. Wolves sent packing. 76ers rebound against Minnesota. ESPN: Come playoff time, Iverson, Philly still look formidable

Knicks Hack Sixers
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by webmaster
In by far the ugliest game this season, the Sixers lose to the Knicks 78-71. Knicks make it a point to shut down Iverson as they hacked him to a season low 15 points. "The refs weren't giving me any calls. I felt like a rookie," he said. "I know that at this point in my career I'm not supposed to let the referees get into my head. But they got the best of me." This time even LB agreed.

Iverson's Revealing Interview

Talks of admiration for Brown, life off court in an interview appearing in the March edition of Playboy magazine. In the Playboy interview, Iverson deals with - among other things - the tragic shooting death of close friend Rah Langeford in Newport News, Va., about the deep, personal meanings of his various tattoos, why he does not intend to attempt to do a rap album again, and his relationship with the media. Here's another article, Iverson haunted by death of friend.

Iverson Named Player of the Week for the Second Straight Week
Posted Tuesday, January 29, 2002 by webmaster
AI does it again winning the POW for the 2nd straight week.
During the week Iverson led the Sixers to a 3-1 record by posting averages of 37.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals, while connecting on 54-117 (.462) from the field.

  • Monday vs. Seattle: Scored 38 points, including the 10,000 of his career, in 109-98 loss to the SuperSonics.
  • Tuesday at Washington: Had 34 points and five assists in 91-84 victory over the Wizards.
  • Friday at Boston: Had a Fleet Center record 47 points, to go along with five assists, four rebounds and three steals in a 106-90 victory over the Celtics.
  • Sunday vs. L.A. Lakers: Scored 29 points, had three assists and two steals in 93-87 victory over the two-time defending NBA Champion Lakers.

    Take that, LA!
Posted Sunday, January 27, 2002 by webmaster
Things are changin' for the Sixers, really. The fact that they've reached .500 and beat the L.A. Lakers 93-87 today gives a good indication of that. In the second rematch of last year's final, the Sixers would wipe Phil Jackson off as coach of the West All-Stars and give the Sixers their biggest win yet. And no, Iverson didn't pull off another 47 like last game, but Deke and DC stepped up in the 4th to seal the win. Iverson down hard in the second on a missed layup attempt and landed on a camera. But he was back for the start of the third quarter and played the rest of the game and scored 29 points. "You're not going to stop Shaquille. You're not going to stop Kobe," Iverson said. "But I think collectively as a whole we did a good job on defense limiting those guys to one shot." Like I said, things are changing. Go Sixers!

    Iverson torches Celts for 47
Posted Saturday, January 26, 2002 by webmaster
When Allen Iverson hit a jump shot for his 44th and 45th points, he yelled to the Boston bench: "You can't stop me," Indeed, the Celtics couldn't as the Sixers beat the Celts 106 to 90. Iverson was phenomenal, scoring 47 big points, a Fleet Center record. "It's satisfying because it's a win," said Iverson, who made 16 of 31 shots, including four three-pointers, and 8 of 11 free throws. He also finished with 5 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds and 5 turnovers. "We need wins now. It doesn't matter what team it's against or what arena we're in. We just need wins, whether it's at home or away. We've got to figure out a way to put wins together. Whether they look good or ugly, it doesn't matter, as long as when the buzzer sounds, we have more points."

    Sixers Whup Wizards
Posted Tuesday, January 22, 2002 by webmaster
The first half belonged to Michael Jordan. The second half belonged to Allen Iverson. Iverson scored 22 of his 34 points in the second half as the Sixers whup Wizards 91-84 Tuesday night. Iverson and Jordan, who had embraced before the game, expressed a mutual respect afterward. "I try not to get into [a one-on-one confrontation] like that," Iverson said. "I try to approach every game the same, whether I'm playing against Michael Jordan or somebody who doesn't have a big game." The only real scare for Iverson came when he was clawed in the eye by Tyronn Lue. Click here to see the video clip. He was down for a couple minutes, but shrugged it off like tons of injuries he's had before and kept playing.

Allen Iverson Named Player of the Week
Posted Tuesday, January 22, 2002 by webmaster
Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant, who each had 50-point games, were named as the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week. Here are the highlights of his week. Iverson captured his second Player of the Week award this season and led the Sixers to a 3-0 record by averaging 41.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists. Here is a look back at the past week for Iverson:

  • Tuesday vs. Houston: Recorded a career-high 58 points (21-of-42) in the Sixers 112-106 OT win over the Rockets. His 58 points ties Wilt Chamberlain for the fourth position in Sixer scoring history.
  • Thursday at Charlotte: Scored 33 points while adding four, rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 93-88 win over the Hornets.
  • Saturday vs. New York: Had 34 points, five rebounds and seven assists in a 97-89 win over the visiting Knicks.

    Sonics Sink Sixers
Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by webmaster
The Seattle SuperSonics couldn't miss. At least it seemed that way as they shot over 66% to beat the Sixers 109-98 on Monday. On a good note, Allen Iverson led the Sixers with 38 points, and became the eighth player in Philadelphia history to score 10,000 career points. Iverson went over 10,000 career points with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 8:50 left in the game. "I give a lot of credit to myself, but also to my teammates, coach Brown and the coaching staff," Iverson said.

    Sixers Rally Past Knicks
Posted Sunday, January 20, 2002 by webmaster
Despite the attention of the Eagles playoff game, the Sixers rallied past the Knicks 97-89. "Everyone has their role, but when you can do your role plus, that makes us a championship-caliber team," said Iverson, who scored 34 points. "We needed it, we need everything we can get." A week from today could be awesome. Imagine, the Sixers hosting the Lakers at noon, televised nationwide on NBC. Then, should the Green Bay Packers beat the St. Louis Rams today, the Eagles will play at home for a trip to the Super Bowl.

    Sixers Sting Hornets
Posted Friday, January 18, 2002 by webmaster
The streaking Sixers have now won six of eight games as they beat the Hornets 93 to 88 Thursday night. Iverson shot poorly but still poured in 33 and hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to seal the win. "We're getting better, the chemistry is getting better on both ends of the floor," Iverson said. "We've got to get back to playing harder than everybody else. We didn't have all the best players last year, but we played harder than everybody. We're starting to do that again."

Kobe Who? Allen Answers with 58
Posted Tuesday, January 15, 2002 by webmaster
Kobe: Anything you can do, Iverson can do better. One night after Kobe tallied 56 points, AI went for a career-high 58 in the Sixers' 112-106 OT thriller over the Rockets on Tuesday. Iverson shot 21-of-42 and made all 14 of his free throws for his 7th 50-point game. Iverson, however, was humble about the feat, "I've won scoring titles, I've scored 50 points before and I have won individual awards...I haven't won a championship, and that is the only thing I am concerned about." Iverson's previous career-high was 54, accomplished twice. His 58 points was the most in an NBA game in almost two years. Message Board: Kobe Who?

    Sixers Spank Spurs
Posted Saturday, January 12, 2002 by webmaster
Despite the new inner conflict between AI and Brown, the Sixers put away one of the giants of the west as they beat the Spurs 101 to 84. In the 76ers' first game since Iverson criticized coach Larry Brown and then was kicked out of practice earlier Friday, the league MVP hit 14-of-31 shots and was 9-of-10 from the foul line. He scored a game high 37 points . "I was asked to leave and I left, those things happen sometimes," Iverson said. "But I learned from last game to get myself together before talking. It becomes a circus. I didn't lie about anything, all I did was speak my mind, said Iverson, who has sparred with Brown on numerous occasions. Sometimes people take it the wrong way. The media thinks I'm trying to battle my coach, that there's a war between us but I have no problem with my coach. Sometimes I disagree with him and sometimes he disagrees with me."

    Iverson launches outburst after loss
Posted Thursday, January 10, 2002 by webmaster
After the 76ers' 20th loss of the season last night, Allen Iverson went on a frustrated, fed-up, five-minute diatribe about the state of the team one season after reaching the NBA Finals. It was not pretty. "We're just not the same team that we were last year," Iverson said after last night's 102-91 loss to the Orlando Magic, who improved to 19-18. "We were much better defensively. Our offensive chemistry, we were just a much better team. A lot of stuff that goes on on the court out there didn't go on on the court last year. Nothing's being done about it. These are the results. We have 20 losses."

    Sixers Lose To Magic

Just when you thought the Sixers where getting back into championship mode, they lose a tough one to the Magic. T-Mac and Grant denied the Sixers as the Sixer lose 102-91. Coming off a triple-double night, Iverson scored 27 off 12-of-28 shooting. "We're just not like the team we were last year," Iverson said. "We were much better defensively and had more offensive chemistry. We were just a much better team."

    Iverson's Triple-Double Special
Posted Monday, January 7, 2002 by webmaster
It was a night to remember, Iverson recorded his first career triple-double, helping the 76ers beat the Clippers 116-92 on Monday night. "My teammates did a great job finishing shots, getting me the ball and boxing out," said Iverson, who finished with 30 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 4 steals. "It feels good to finally get one. It took me six years." The crowd of 20,414 gave Iverson, the NBA's reigning MVP, a standing ovation after his last rebound.

    Last Stop A Defeat

The Sixers finally ended their 7-game road trip in a 96-88 defeat to the Blazers. Iverson only scored 18 on 7-of-20 shooting as they end their 2-game headband-wearing winning streak. They go home and play the Clippers on Sunday.

    Sixers Stop Sonics
Posted Friday, January 4, 2002 by webmaster
The Sixers look, not just because of their new headbands, but because their game is improved. "We played great. We had a great collective effort on defense," Iverson said after the 76ers snapped the SuperSonics' six-game winning streak, 87-77 Friday night. Iverson started slowly and shot poorly but finished with 22 points. Iverson, who shot 1-for-6 and had three points in the first quarter, played 43 minutes and shot 8-for-21 as the 76ers won their second straight game on their longest road trip of the season. "Obviously, we're getting better because we're winning games," Iverson said. "Hopefully, this was a step in the direction of what we're trying to accomplish." This time, both Deke and Harp wore headbands.

    Sixers Burn Suns
Posted Thursday, January 3, 2002 by webmaster
The Sixers finally turned things around. Whether it was because of rumours of Larry Brown resigning, the start of the 2002 year, or even the headbands, the Sixers finally showed their championship play when they burned the Suns 102-81 Wednesday night. Allen Iverson scored 29 points, and three other Sixers players scored at least 15. Iverson sported a red headband with Snow, while the rest of the team wore black ones. Deke and Harp were the only ones without headbands. "Harp and Dikembe reneged on us," Iverson said jokingly. "We've got some of us together on the same page, but we've got a couple of guys we've got to reach out too." Coach Larry Brown denied the latest rumor about his resignation. Iverson seemed irritated at the whole subject. "I don't care nothing about no rumors," he said. "I never thought about that at all. I'm tired of hearing about that, and he didn't tell us he was thinking about leaving or anything." As for the headbands, bet you'll see them again in Seattle.
