Rocky Road Trip Posted Thursday, January 2, 2003 by webmaster
After falling to Utah and Golden State, with AI scoring 13 and 27 points, the Sixers managed to hang on for the win against the Clippers on New Year's Eve. AI scored 27 points as the pulled off a desperation win 83-75 over the Clippers. Iverson missed his first three shots - all three-pointers - but hit his next six in a row as the Sixers pulled within 29-23. Iverson is shooting 26.6% from beyond the arc this season and 39.1%. He's slid into second in points per game (27.4) behind first place T-mac. I think too many tough shots and long-ranged bombs. He definitely needs to better shot selection and improve his FG%.
Sixers Outlast Lakers in OT Posted Saturday, December 21, 2002 by webmaster
There was a certain playoff atmosphere going into last night's Sixers and Lakers matchup. Both teams put on a gutsy performance that went the distance to OT. Miraculously, the Sixers were able to edge the Lakers 107-104, despite Iverson missing 2 most important free throws in the game. Iverson put up 32 points and tied a career-high 9 steals. Iverson played 48 of 53 minutes in the contest, but choked at the line missing 2 free throws that could have put them up by 3. But fate had it for the Sixers to win, as Horry's pass to a wide-open Fox fumbled. After the game, Iverson announced something special. "I'm happy," he said afterward. "I found out my wife [Tawanna] is pregnant last night, and we won the game. It can't get no better than today." Congratulations to Allen for the win and the new child!
Boston-Philly Rivalry Posted Thursday, December 5, 2002 by webmaster
Ahh...sweet revenge. The Sixers fought a tough, intense battle against their rival Celtics and came through with the win, 99-93, staying a perfect 10-0 at home, at top of the Atlantic Division at 15-4. Their 8th win in a row, Sixers haven't played this kinda ball since 2001 when they went all the way to the finals. Iverson made statement, "We're serious and we're back to playing Sixer basketball like we did in 2001; we're scrapping and we're fighting. We don't have any easy wins, but we'll fight you till the end." Iverson led the Sixers with 27 points and 7 asssits. Though he was shutdown in the 4th, Snow and Coleman took over and Coleman a dagger 3 pointer in the final minute. Coach Brown got T'd near the half, and pushed Snow out of the way and walked to the ref. But Iverson got in front of him and pleaded, "Don't do that, Coach." Iverson and Coleman escorted Brown into the locker room.
Real Steal Posted Tuesday, December 3, 2002 by webmaster
Sixers won their 14th game of the season, and their 7th in a row as they edge MJ's Wizards by a point, 95-94. Iverson again paced the Sixers, scoring 35 points on 12-for-27 matching up with Stackhouse shot for shot.
AI earned player of the week again, now his 10th time and 2nd back-to-back times earning the award . Iverson averaged 32.3 points on .449 shooting (44-98 FGA) with 4.8 assists, and 2.5 steals as the 76ers went 4-0, placing 2nd in the East.
I feel sorry for the Nets, they must be kicking their own arse for trading KVH and T-Mac for Mutombo. As this article states the Nets struggles and resurgence of the Sixers. Mutombo's minutes have been dramatically cut, and often confused on offence, and not capable of playing the defence he once was able to. On the other hand, Van Horn and MacCulloch are doing just fine. Van Horn is shooting 47.2 percent from the floor, while averaging 16.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, compared with 43.3-percent shooting, 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds last season. Despite foot problems, MacCulloch is averaging a career-high 10.3 points in 25.2 minutes per game, compared with 9.7 points in 24.2 minutes last season. I guess the Nets are now seeing what the Sixers saw last year, that the 36-year old Mutombo is beyond his prime, and it was good thing Sixers got lose of him ;-)
