Sixers : Iverson scores NBA season-high 45 points, but loses
Posted on by Dal

Allen Iverson's latest brilliant performance wasn't enough to get Philadelphia a victory, as Bucks beat the 76ers 108-97

Iverson scored an NBA season-high 45 points, his sixth straight game with 30 or more points against Milwaukee, and it came two nights after he sat out the fourth quarter of a victory over New Orleans because of flu-like symptoms.

"I didn't feel well at all," Iverson said. "I didn't even know I was going to play until after warmups. After warmups, I was kind of light headed, but I just gave it a shot."

Iverson didn't get much help from his teammates, C-Webb had 11 pts and 11 boards. Also, the Sixers have terrible defense, as they are 2nd in points against them, averaging 105.0 points against.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Allen Iverson's latest brilliant performance wasn't enough to get Philadelphia a victory.

Iverson scored an NBA season-high 45 points, but Michael Redd had 32 for Milwaukee and the Bucks beat the 76ers 108-97 Wednesday night.

Iverson, who was 13-of-30 from the floor and 17-of-19 from the line, surpassed the 43 points Kobe Bryant had for the Los Angeles Lakers against Chicago three days ago. Gilbert Arenas also had 43 for Washington against San Antonio on Nov. 12.

It was Iverson's sixth straight game with 30 or more points against Milwaukee, and it came two nights after he sat out the fourth quarter of a victory over New Orleans because of flu-like symptoms.

"I didn't feel well at all," Iverson said. "I didn't even know I was going to play until after warmups. After warmups, I was kind of light headed, but I just gave it a shot."

Redd said that the Bucks, who had four players in double figures, did a better job in the second half after allowing Iverson to score 26 points in the first half.

"Iverson's phenomenal," said Redd, who shot 11-of-25. "He's one of the few guys in the NBA who's unstoppable."

The Bucks tightened their defense on Iverson in the second half, but focused even more on the rest of the Sixers.

"The key is to contain everybody else around him," Redd said. "Then, you have a chance to win."

While Iverson scored 10 in the third and nine in the fourth, his teammates only had 18 second-half points.

"We didn't play any defense and we didn't rebound the ball," Iverson said, noting the Bucks outrebounded the 76ers 55-38. "When you get outrebounded like that, you can't win basketball games and we're giving up 100 points every night."

Chris Webber, Steven Hunter and John Salmons each had 11 points for the Sixers. Webber had 11 rebounds and Hunter 10, but the Bucks scored 21 second-chance points.

Iverson averaged 45.2 points -- his best mark against any opponent -- while leading the Sixers to a four-game sweep of Milwaukee last season.

Joe Smith had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Bobby Simmons scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Maurice Williams added 14 points and Jamaal Magloire 11 for Milwaukee.

After Hunter's dunk tied it at 88, Redd sparked a 9-0 run with four points to give the Bucks a 97-88 lead with 3:50 left to play.

Iverson stopped the run with two free throws when T.J. Ford fouled him and picked up his sixth foul.

Simmons' 3-pointer capped a 17-2 run that erased the Sixers' 10-point cushion and gave the Bucks a 76-71 lead with 2:24 left in the third. The Bucks were 10-of-10 from the free throw line during the surge.

Iverson scored Philadelphia's final six points of the third to keep it close. His two free throws pulled the Sixers within 80-77 with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

Iverson had 11 points in the first quarter and 15 in the second to help the Sixers take a 60-51 lead at halftime.

Notes

Sixers F James Thomas was assessed a flagrant foul 2 after grabbing Jamaal Magliore on a drive to the basket with 10:53 left in the fourth. Thomas broke Magliore's fall by hanging on to him. ... Ford had three fouls in the first half trying to contain Iverson, then went to the bench early in the third after tripping him for his fourth foul. ... Bucks C Andrew Bogut played the second half with a face mask to protect his broken nose. He'll have surgery on Thanksgiving Day. He hopes to be able to play against Minnesota on Friday.
